Diet quantity during pregnancy:
A normal pregnant woman can naturally absorb the needed energy & nutrients from her balanced diet. Your
health consultant can recommend what calorie count best suits you during pregnancy period as per your BMI. Your own appetite is the best indication of how much food you need to eat and you may find it fluctuating during the course of your pregnancy. Eat smaller but more frequent meals throughout the day. This is particularly useful if you are suffering from sickness, food aversions, acidity, or indigestion after eating then it is always helpful to have small frequent meals. Logic is that Even if you're not hungry, chances are your baby is, so try to eat every four hours.
Avoidable food during pregnancy:
There are certain types of food which make our blood impure and are the cause of abortion. Choice of wrong food will leave wrong impact on the developing fetus. There are few common things that we know. Like, taking clear butter with equal amount of honey will make poison. There are several food combinations that are not good for mother and the fetus. For example, Green leafy vegetables and milk are good to have separately. But they are very harmful when consumed together. Wrong food habits will always lead us to health problems. Lot of skin problems occur because of the wrong combination of food.
Avoid Dairy products made with unpasteurized milk like cottage cheese preparations, tikkas and raw paneer sandwiches. If not fresh then they aren't safe to eat during pregnancy. They are more likely to contain bacteria that may cause food poisoning. Advice from doctor and an antenatal / garbh sanskar consultant.
Supplements during pregnancy:
A vitamin and mineral supplement may be a good idea to help you get all the vitamins and minerals you need. This helps when you are facing nutrient deficiency due to insufficient balance diet during pregnancy. Pregnant woman must consult with her doctor and antenatal / garbh sanskar consultant about diet if she is a strict vegetarian; have diseases like gestational diabetes, anemia or have a history of low-birth weight babies. In these cases you may need extra vitamins and minerals, or you might have to eat a special diet.
For eg., Folic acid as a supplement may recommend by your doctor and antenatal / garbh sanskar consultant.
Caution: Very high doses of vitamins and minerals could be harmful to your baby. Always check them with your doctor and antenatal / garbh sanskar consultant before taking any medicines or tablets.
Dieting during pregnancy:
Dieting during pregnancy is not suggestive during pregnancy time. Avoiding recommended diet can deficit iron, folic acid or other important vitamins and minerals in would-be mother’s body which may harm her and fetus. Optimum weight gain is one of the most positive signs of a healthy pregnancy. Women who eat well as per diet plan are more likely to have healthy babies.
Weight gain during pregnancy:
Weight gain varies among women. Need is to focus on taking a healthy diet having carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, reasonable amounts of protein, milk and dairy foods, and just a little of fats and sugars.
Pregnant woman may gain the least weight during the first trimester. Weight should then steadily rise throughout the second trimester, and may put on the most weight throughout the third trimester, when fetus is growing the most. If you are overweight or underweight, your doctor and antenatal / garbh sanskar consultant may advise a special diet. A woman needs to maintain 17 to 20% of her body weight as fat in order to menstruate and ovulate regularly. Being either underweight or overweight can affect a woman’s fertility.
Note: It is equally important to take advise from a Antenatal consultant or a Health-care provider before coming to any conclusion.
